This long wooden boardwalk, named in honour of Governor General Dufferin, extends along the top of Cap Diamant, wrapping around the Château Frontenac and concealing the remnants of a 17th-century fort beneath its boards. The promenade is wide, with green wooden benches and gazebos topped with green and white stripes reminiscent of the 1800’s era. From here, you can see stunning views of the St. Lawrence River snaking past the city and the 17th- and 18th-century stone houses of Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale perched below. In summer, the boardwalk is alive with music and acrobatic performances. You can also board the funicular that will take you down to rue du Petit-Champlain in Lower Town (or the other way around if you prefer), or walk up the stairs at the end of the boardwalk to reach the governors’ promenade, which runs along the Citadel and leads to the Plains of Abraham. The Dufferin Terrace is also a great place to watch summertime firework displays. If you would like to visit the fort remnants between May and Ocotber, you can buy tickets online at Park Canada or look for the Beaver Sign on the glass gazebo, it can easily be missed. In winter, it’s home to one of the oldest attractions in Québec City, the Glissade de la Terrasse – long wooden sleds with curved fronts and red cushions gliding quickly down a steep, slippery slide. It’s quite a ride. You can buy tickets in the winter season for the toboggan online at au1884 or at the au 1884 location between the Château and the Toboggan venue.
